  1. Great tutorial. I shot sports for years with Fuji s100fs w 28-400 fixed lens. Sold many enlargements and had to manually create background blur for every one of them. Selection tools weren't near as good as now so i'd just dup the layer …and keep it on top …totally masked, then make another copy of the background and fill where the important subjects were. Then blur that layer and apply a gradient to it for depth then go to the top layer and using white …reveal the subjects. Got pretty quick.
This is nice and will get quicker with use.
The big problem is it clearly illustrates camera manufacturers should be depth mapping photos in camera. My cell phone creates lovely blur effortlessly and there is no excuse for todays expensive cameras to lack features found in most cell phones. The phones are killing the industry and it needs to be slapped upside the head to wake up and get back in the game.

  2. This tutorial is great. Thanks ever so much. I have corporate portraits that need a little extra background blur and it works very well. Thanks – learned a whole lot of new info.

  3. Does this only work with images from phones? I've been trying to do this with RAW and JPEG images, but no matter what I do, there is no depth map in the channel list.

  4. Good result, but … the photo was better without blur. The blur is the management of those who do not know how to compose.

  5. Thank you Colin for continuing my education into the wonderful world of Photoshop. I've been using Photoshop 5 for years ( and have got fairly proficient ) and am about to take the step into 2020. I've been looking at lots of tutorials on line and your approach means I've got a lot of things to try when I launch CC later this week.. All the best T.

  6. i have being trying to open heic pics from my i phone in my windows pc but photoshop says cant open raw pics what can i do

  7. Fantastic preso…btw the use of depth map is that in a simplified way the Lytro cameras allowed refocus after shooting? thanks again!

  8. Strange, I have a new iphone 11 pro max and PS 2020. But depth map is not showing up in the channels. Ideas why? Thanks!

  9. MEHHHHHHHHHHHHH

" BEFORE " Picture is MUCH BETTER THAN " AFTER " Picture ❗🤧🤪🤣

These Days Blur/Bokeh Effect is TRENDING but PLENTY OF MISUSE LIKE THIS VIDEO ARE PREDOMINANT SADLY.

You Need DEFINITE PROPER REASON TO EXERCISE IT WHERE IT IS RELEVANT ❗❗❗❗❗❗❗❗👻

And Even If You Use It, f=5.6 is What You Have to Remember to Start with It.

  10. It is always a pleasure to see Colin's videos: Even if English is not my native language, everything is very understandable for me and the video fits just fine! Greetings from Berlin in Germany: Richard

  11. super tuto !
why doesn't raw have depth mask ?
can you speak about heic ? no idea what it is. i have an iphone8 and it seems to take pictures in heic synchronized to LR mobile. is it better than jpg ? should we definitely use heic instead of jpg because less destructive ? shoudl'nt i convert my iphone to come back to jpg to be sure it won't be deprecated in the future or not recognized ? does iphone 8 have depth mask ?

  12. A M A Z I N G!! 🙌🏻⚡️💪🏻💥💻👏🏻 I’ve been a massive gaussian blur fan for decades! BIG UPS Colin!

  13. so I tried to do this on one of my own pictures. not so lucky. will try again but it's way to much effort and I think just using a simple blur gallery gets you about the same place.

  14. Wow. Alt+bkspce or opt+del was known to me like other tools (thanx to adobe max 2019 which taught me those other tools), but after using Photoshop for so many years, I still never used shift key with that combination to protect the transperency. It was new to me… Thanks man. I have been using Photoshop since version 7. And its amazing that I still get to know new things every now and then…

  15. Colin – You're a fantastic teacher. Love this. I'm very eager to try it on some of my car show & hot rod photos… Cheers from Nova Scotia…
